Listed as historic monuments since 1879, the three Tours de La Rochelle are real must-sees.
Saint Nicolas Tower (no historical documents attest to the date of its construction) is one of the gateways to La Rochelle’s Old Port alongside the Tour de la Chaîne. It served as a defensive barrier on the town’s seafront for centuries. This military building is a veritable “urban dungeon” and palatial dwelling that faces the ocean, symbolising the power and wealth of La Rochelle.
The origins of the Lantern Tower date back to the late 12th century. It is located at the corner of the defensive wall in the St-Jean-du-Pérot district. As the last mediaeval lighthouse on the Atlantic coast, it served as a lighthouse and prison throughout its history.
