This museum is dedicated to France's relationship with the Americas. It was lauded for its originality when it was founded, as well as its treatment of a part of France’s history that has been largely overlooked. In fact, it was the first museum to speak of the slave history of a French port and present evidence linked to the slave trade and slavery in the colonies of the Antilles.
