Rising to a maximum height of 57 m, the Phare des Baleines lighthouse boasts breath-taking views of Île de Ré and the surrounding inlets. Built in 1849 to reinforce the defences of the old tower constructed under Vauban, and listed as a historic monument, it was inaugurated in 1854.
At the entrance is a bookstore-cum-boutique with a wide range of souvenirs: books, sea-themed decoration, posters, models and so forth.
The Whale Museum, housed at the foot of the old tower, reveals the fascinating history of lighthouses and the techniques used to build them. An educational exhibition consisting of multimedia sequences, panels and objects will enlighten young and old alike!
